The Shape That I'm in

from Six Songs from the Inside by The Usual

/

about

The Shape That I'm in was originally a syrupy but lovely ballad. When Tom Fox (guitar) joined the band in 1996 he was asked to produce a single. After jamming, sections were stripped from the song leaving it as a simple 4 chord structure. Recorded at Street Level Studios in Cape Town by Gravel and Richard Black, The Shape that I'm in was the perfect song for the time in South Africa and raced up the National Charts to the number 1 position immediately establishing itself as a cross-over classic. It is still played on radio today. Remixes saw the song crossing over into the dance-market. The song was nominated for a SAMA Award in 1997.

lyrics

You could stand in the rain
Or you could walk on in
to the dream of a lifetime in the existence of sin

If I'd known any better
I would have passed you by
but my soul has deceived me
Now I sit and I'm wondering why
I'm the Shape that I'm in

When I walk in the sunshine
When I think of your name
There's a light that still blinds me
There's a light in my mind that remains

As the storm it can anger
so shall it pass
Watch the world as it turns in a circle
And I'm left with no reason to ask
Why I'm the Shape that In
